Local context
McCord David H MD PC is a general surgery practice focused on spine, neck, and back care in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. David McCord grew up in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, inspired by his father, Dr. Gerald McCord, whose compassionate family practice emphasized how medical conditions can affect every part of life. Dr. McCord earned top academic honors, graduating valedictorian from Hopkinsville High School and summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University, then attended Cornell University for medical school. He completed a surgical internship and orthopaedic residency at Duke University, followed by a spine fellowship with world-renowned spine surgeon Dr. Paul McAfee (formerly of Johns Hopkins University). Board certified, Dr. McCord has practiced as a spine specialist in Nashville for over twenty years, limiting his care to spine-related issues.
The practice has a history of innovation in back surgery. In the early 1990s, Dr. McCord helped develop semiflexible disc cage replacements and participated in the original FDA study. In 1993, he designed and implemented a minimally invasive technique and instrumentation to become the first surgeon to replace a disc with a cage through a scope. He has continued refining disc cage designs through subsequent FDA approvals and has pursued a related patent application. Dr. McCord has also spearheaded advancements in diagnostic imaging, including bringing Upright MRI technology to Tennessee in 2008. This open MRI supports weightbearing imaging in positions where pain occurs, helping improve diagnostic accuracy compared with traditional lying-down MRIs.
At McCord David H MD PC, favorable outcomes begin with thorough diagnosis and patient education. Dr. McCord emphasizes understanding each patient’s anatomy, the natural course of spinal conditions if left untreated, and treatment options including conservative care. If surgery is considered, outcomes and risks—including the possibility of unexpected results—are discussed so patients can make informed decisions.
